NORIS welcomes the Oregon Police Department and the Sylvania Township Police Department as the newest users of the Computer Records System (CRS). The system, which is used to record and manage incident reports, features a common database, which allows for information sharing among member departments.
NORIS is participating in the Ohio Local Law Enforcement Sharing Network (OLLEISN) project, administered by the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police. Funded by federal homeland security dollars, OLLEISN is creating a repository to allow law enforcement agencies to electronically share incident information across the state. The goal of the project is to provide law enforcement agencies with the information necessary to prevent and respond to acts of crime and terrorism.
NORIS provides a criminal history record check service. The cost is $8.00 for a standard local criminal history check through the National WebCheck Program. Fingerprint·based criminal history checks are: Ohio: $37.00; FBI: $39.00; and both Ohio & FBI: $61.00. Non·profit and local governmental agencies may qualify for a discounted rate. Record checks can be processed via mail, fax, or in person at the NORIS offices. Please call 419·213·3839 for forms or for additional information.
The Northwest Ohio Regional Information System (NORIS) was formed in 1976 to provide records automation for Toledo Municipal Court, the Toledo Police Department, and the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office. By 1988, NORIS was supporting 88 terminals in city and county offices. Currently, NORIS supports over 2,000 terminals/PCs and MDCs in twenty-two Ohio and Michigan counties that link more than 4,500 users who collectively perform more than seven million transactions per month. NORIS maintains criminal histories on 700,000 offenders and offers on·line access to active local warrants, protection orders, mugshots, criminal histories and court, jail and police records.
NORIS is governed by the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC), a special purpose unit of local government designed to improve coordination within the criminal justice system. The NORIS User Group (NUG) meets to review issues involving the overall operation of NORIS. In addition, user forums are held to gain user input and ideas to expand the services and extend systems.
NORIS User Group
All NORIS user agencies are invited to participate in the NORIS User Group (NUG). The group meets to discuss new and on·going NORIS projects. This forum allows users to ask questions and provide input to NORIS staff. Collaboration and open dialog are encouraged to insure comprehensive responses to users’ needs.
The NUG advises the NORIS Advisory Committee (NAC), when so asked, on financial, equipment, operational, and procedural issues involving NORIS. The NAC is a subcommittee of the CJCC. Current NAC members include:
