CRS Success Story
Prior to computerized information management, obtaining criminal records was a labor intensive and time-consuming task for Lieutenant Mel Stachura and the rest of the Toledo Police Department. Reports had to be searched by hand, with no automated method for tracking cases. All records, personnel files, investigations, and other law enforcement information were manually processed.

In response to this exhausting method of information management, the Toledo Police Department adopted the Computer Records System (CRS). CRS is used to record and manage crime reports. The application features cross-referencing of multiple crime reports, incident and report management, crime mapping, and many other effective capabilities that combine to improve officer productivity. For TPD, Lt. Stachura feels the program’s foremost success is how it integrates other agencies and applications, providing efficient information sharing among multiple departments.

According to Lt. Stachura, CRS has served as both a time and cost saving device. Specifically, he measures cost as the “percentage of an employee’s salary saved in time and effort in obtaining the information needed to do one’s job”. Taking this into account, Lt. Stachura estimates that CRS is responsible for cutting thousands of lost hours and dollars.
